Lumbini is the birthplace of Lord Buddha and the ultimate site of pilgrimage for all Buddhists and people who cherish peace and harmony. Situated in the fertile foothills of Nepal’s Churiya range in the lowland Terai Region, close to the Indian border, it is a place of lush gardens, tranquil pools and open skies, with the golden pinnacles of its shrines and temples rising above the trees.
The seven day tour takes in some of the many sites in Lumbini and the surrounding area that are associated with the life of Buddha. Lord Buddha himself proclaimed the site as one of the four most important places of pilgrimage known as the Chatumahasthana, representing four stages of his life: birth, enlightenment, his first sermon, and mahaparinirvana, or the death of Buddha. Lord Buddha was born Prince Siddhartha Gautam in the 6th century B.C. The stone slab located deep within the Sanctorum of the Mayadevi Temple marks his sacred birthplace. Ancient sandstone sculptures within the temple depict scenes from his life. The sacred pool of Pushkarini within the main garden marks the place where his mother bathed before giving birth.
The circuit itinerary begins with a local flight from Kathmandu and then a short drive from Bhairahawa to the Lumbini Gardens. There is plenty of time then to explore the surrounding three square miles of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprised of the sacred garden, including the Mayadevi temple, the monastic zone and Lumbini village.
The monasteries of different branches of Buddhism that surround the temple site mark the boundary of this holy place, and to preserve its sanctity no commercial establishments have been allowed within this area. The gardens are just a short walk or rickshaw ride away from the main road. Stepping inside the gardens, you are greeted by the soft chants of pilgrims drifting on the breeze. This sets the tone of the place, and you can spend time wandering the paths and lawns, soaking up the tranquil ambience. Visits to local rural villages and other archaeological and religious sites in the area at Kapilavastu, Devdaha and Ramagram complete a wonderfully memorable spiritual and cultural journey.
